Doctoral studies must play a key role as the crossroads between the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA), both of which are cornerstones of the knowledge society. According to the new regulatory framework for official doctoral programmes (Royal Decree 99/2011, 28th January), Universities can create Doctoral Schools responsible for organizing, planning and developing doctoral programmes.

The aim here is to ensure high-quality doctoral programmes in which to train qualified students that enable the furthering of research and innovation, strengthening diversity, creativity and mobility, in line with the Salzburg and Berlin Principles (2005 and 2010, respectively).
